I believe I was around 11 years old when The Chronic came out. I begged my mother for the money to buy the tape (yes, tape) when we were at the mall. I never really stayed with my mother though when we went to the mall. I usually would go to the arcade, the bookstore, and then the record store before meeting her wherever she would be at.

Anyways. I had the cash in hand, got up to the register and didn’t know a damn thing about sales tax..so I didn’t have enough to buy the tape. I was probably fifty cents or so short, so I went to go get the extra money from my mother who was down at Sears. It took forever to find her, but when I did catch up with her, she gave me one more dollar.

Now, when I left to go find her, I had left my money on the counter and told the guy that I’d be back. Of course when I got back to the store, they guy says that the person behind me said that it was their money and took off with it. I was pretty upset and also probably had a pretty perplexed look on my face as my mother had now made her way down to the store.

The manager decided that in an attempt to rectify the situation that they would give me ten single cassettes. The majority of them were crap that no one would ever buy. Like Tisha Campbell and Dr. Alban. I did get a Monie Love single out of it though, and also the first song by Akinyele. I was lucky enough for my mother to spend the cash to actually get the tape for me.

I wonder what those bastards spent my money on.

  1. i did not expect your story to go the way it did but i guess that just goes to show, life isn’t always what you expect. i would’ve cried + my mother would’ve cussed me out + made me cry more. damn. the chronic was the business (and still is) though, my brother + i actually washed the neighbor’s cars to get some cash for that.

I probably left out the part where I got slapped afterwards. MamaWallace liked to hit. I had to do a few chores to get the cash as well..mostly just cutting the grass though.
